Richard Shaver's Chilling Tales From The Inner EarthBy Richard S. Shaver

Before Rod Serling There Was RICHARD S. SHAVER He Became A Legend In The Genres Of Science Fiction, Horror And The Arcane. He Enthralled Thousands With His Creepy Tales Of A Vast Cavern System Right Below Our Feet, Which He Insisted Was Populated By A Mentally Impaired Race Of Deformed, Sadistic, Cannibalistic Creatures Known As The Dero. And While His Bone-Chilling Accounts Were Published In Pulp Science Fiction Magazines like Amazing Stories back in the 1940s and 1950s, Richard Shaver Maintained That Each And Every Declaration He Made Was ABSOLUTELY TRUE! The Dero, Shaver lamented, were kidnapping surface-dwellers on a regular basis for “meat and torture.” They had appropriated sophisticated “ray” machines that the great ancient races had left behind that made humans go stark raving mad. They spied on people and projected tormenting thoughts and voices into their heads. And the Dero could be blamed for almost all misfortunes, from minor accidents to airplane crashes and other catastrophic disasters. And, while generally confined to their caves, Shaver claimed that the Dero sometimes traveled in spaceships and had dealings with evil extraterrestrials. He claimed to possess first-hand knowledge of the Dero and their caves, because, he insisted, he had been kept prisoner dozens of miles below the Earth’s surface for years. Notes one researcher: “There are 500 buildings in the United States where elevators go deeper than the basement. And those unfortunate enough to descend to this dark void either emerge nearly catatonic or are never seen again.” Here then are five of Richard Shaver’s best and most icy tales of the underground, a place you do not want to make your next home!

After going to traditional physical therapy, 2 sessions a week for three months, and continuing to lose range of motion and have no pain relief, my PT sent me back to the orthopedist to seek surgery. The orthopedist said he would do surgery if I really wanted it, but that frozen shoulders will resolve on their own, given time. Enough said! There were no guarantees with surgery, except painful recovery and bills. But now without therapy, my muscles began to tighten up so badly that my shoulder began to draw in, my muscles felt like piano wire... such bad memories! Fortunately I found this book and, although a skeptic, desperation drove me to buy it and read it. I was also very fortunate that I was able to find a therapeutic massage therapist locally who was familiar with the methods. Three visits to her in about two weeks time and I was worlds better! This was not your relaxing little massage, but still way less painful than PT sessions. When my other shoulder started to freeze up, it took only 2 sessions to stop it's progression. I would quickly add, I suffered from chronic back pain for decades and not until one PT did some deep massage did ANYthing help. Such a simple thing I wish I had discovered sooner. --It has been about 4 years since my shoulders were bad, but because I just recommended this book to a friend and looked it up again, I decided to write a review about my own experience for those it might help.

If or when I'm completely free of shoulder pain, I'll come back and give this book 5 stars. So far it has helped me more than any diagnosis or treatment along conventional routes, at considerably less cost. Even if you're satisfied with the medical treatment you're receiving or have gotten in the past, this is an excellent source of information about the shoulders, how they work, and what can go wrong. Highly recommend.UPDATE: Having never received a definitive diagnosis, all I know is I had very painful and long-lasting injuries centering around both my rotator cuffs. As the only "treatment" I received was the advice in this book and the passage of time, I stand by my original review. Still not completely pain free, but close enough for 5 stars.

This is a very informative, detailed, descriptive & we'll written book for anyone who is SERIOUSLY looking into learning about trigger points. It is written by someone who themselves, had experienced a frozen shoulder, so knows first hand the experience of what the "usual & customary" course of action is from a doctor/surgeon's perspective, & then what happens IF that still doesn't work. The workbook goes into great deal about anatomy of the shoulder to better educate the reader & give an understanding on how to heal USING trigger point therapy. Great book; I am in the Healthcare field.... a surgeon's assistant, & I still learned a lot from this workbook.

Great book! It's already teaching me so much about the way my shoulder works and the muscles. I have been testing out all of the massages on my messed up left shoulder. Everyday I'm seeing an improvement to my range of motion. This book covers the very real and useful application of massage to muscles. I work at a gym where we focus on using "floss" on our limbs, and even vibrating rollers and balls, and it has done wonders to fix pain in my knee especially and other joints. Most people turn to drugs and surgery to fix pain, DON'T make that mistake. Work on your muscles. We thrive on using smartphones everyday, which causes overuse in certain muscles. Get to know your body and never look for the easy way out. There is no easy path in life if you want to be pain free or successful in work. You have to earn happiness.

Love this book- exactly what I was looking for. As a massage therapy student, I very much appreciate this author! This is geared towards a therapist. If you have shoulder problems please find a good massage therapist (make sure they do trigger point therapy) that can help you. You only have one body. Take the time to invest in yourself..in your health and quality of life. ♡

My husband had a frozen shoulder a few years ago. We made the usual medical field rounds: orthopaedic specialist, MRI, drugs. Nothing fixed the problem. The doctor said the tests were inconclusive and they would need to operate to see what the problem was. My husband said, "No Way!" A friend recommended a chiropractor in the next town, and within three weeks the shoulder was free of pain with full range of motion. My husband was astounded. A few months ago his other shoulder started freezing up. We now live 300 miles from the chiropractor who fixed his left shoulder. We bought this book and the Thera Cane Massager. By using these he has freed his shoulder. Anyone who has had a frozen shoulder can appreciate just how amazing this is.If you feel you cannot get enough relief by working the trigger points yourself, look for a local licensed massage therapist and ask if s/he knows about trigger points before making an appointment. S/he won't be offended and you won't be disappointed.Definitely try this book first. It is well worth the money. Who knew it was so simple?

I am using this book while I recover from bilateral frozen shoulders. Excellent detailed review of mechanics of shoulder. Not a book for you unless you really want details. I found it excellent

As with the original Trigger Point book, this is a great learning tool for myself and am able to apply and take questions to my Chiropractor to continue the healing process of a shoulder injury. The total coverage of the book as it relates to back issues is applicable since I have scoliosis and I believe this is the reason for why it is taking time. There is so much to learn about the shoulder and how it relates to everyday tasks, thank you for a readable and understandable learning tool for a non-medical person.

I'm a physicist by education, but find myself as a software developer these days. I taught myself C#, C++, Matlab, etc, out of necessity, but don't really know what the heck I'm doing. My latest challenge is to write a custom network protocol to send multiple files over a satellite connection in a reliable manner, but with less overhead than, say, FTP. If you've ever googled such a task (as of 2013 at least), you'll know that the resources online are sparse, and code examples aren't great. Although this book was published almost 9years ago, it is still completely relevant, and breaks easy to follow. It explains the concept of Sockets, as well as TcpListener, and TcpClient (which are C# abstractions built on top of the Socket Class) in great manner. Code examples are presented, and then a summary of each class used, and what each method used does. I highly recommend this book if you're tackling any C# network programming.

This book teaches TCP Socket programming using C# in a very efficient step-by-step manner.Unlike many other books on .NET that I have, this one does not just give you code samples and leave you to scratch your head trying to figure out what's going on there. Instead, it analyzes all code samples line-by-line, leaving you virtually no questions to ask.I gave this book 4 stars only because I was particularly interested in using multithreading with sockets for the project I'm working on, and this book's chapter on threading is surprisingly weak.Other than that, it's a great manual to start with if you need to learn how to write socket apps in .NET.

Well, it's a narrow subject area, but if you need to know about TCP/IP Sockets in C#, this is the book for you. I love narrowly focused books. They are the easiest and fastest way to become an expert on an area of interest. This one has everything you need for TCP/IP Sockets in C#, including, of course, code examples.

This book delivers a good understanding of sockets. I have read one or two other books regarding the subject. The thing I like about this one is A) the whole book is dedicated to it. B) Its explanations are probably the best I have read regarding any topic in programming. Remember first starting C++, and the first chapters of the book taught you how to add integers? You kind of sit there saying "Yeah, Yeah, get on with the hard stuff". As a total compliment: That is how this books makes you feel about sockets! The explanations and examples almost make it impossible to believe it is really that simple.

I bought this when trying to figure out sockets and threads, and it was pretty good. However, I need secure sockets - SSL or TLS (tbd). Nothing in the book about how to set them for C# .net?

The author does a good job of walking the reader through the process of socket programming in C#. This is the best and most complete text I've found on the subject. I would have liked it to cover one step further in product development with sockets. But the author left that for the reader to figure out. No big deal. So I give it a full 5 rating.

I've read through the first couple of chapters and I must say this is a good book. The thing I like most about this book is that the authors take time to not only give you working code but explain what the heck blocks within the programs do. If you are a novice programmer you may want to pick up a different book because it does assume you have a good understanding of basic C# programming.

I'm new to network programming, this was a great starter! Good examples and explanation of code. Thanks!

The Grand Idea: George Washington's Potomac and the Race to the WestBy Joel Achenbach

The war had been won. Now what? This was the pressing political question for the United States in 1784, and a consuming one for George Washington. He had laid down his sword and returned home to Mount Vernon after eight and a half years as commander of the Continental Army. He vowed that he had retired forever, that he would be a farmer on the bank of the Potomac River, under his own "vine and fig tree." But history was not done with him, and he was not done with history.

Within a year, as Joel Achenbach relates in this stunning narrative, Washington saddled up and rode away on one of the most daring journeys of his rich and adventurous life: a trek across the Appalachian mountains to the frontier, where he would inspect his long-neglected western property and try to collect rent.

The Grand Idea is the story of Washington's ambitions for the brand-new republic that he had fought so hard to create. His western journey culminates in a breathtaking scheme: Washington, with the help of Thomas Jefferson, will transform the Potomac River into a commercial artery that will link the new West to the old East. Worried that the newborn country was so fragmented that it might literally split into two separate and rival nations, he uses the skills he learned as a young backwoods surveyor to come up with his river plan. The future of the Union, Washington believes, depends on the Potomac route to the West, which will bind the country to one enterprise.

Achenbach's sympathetic and wry portrait of General Washington is not the stiff figure of official portraits, but that of a bold man who plunges into uncharted forest and sleeps in a downpour with only his cloak for shelter. He is an inventor, entrepreneur, and land speculator. He loves the West. This Washington is someone who understands that the fledgling republic clinging to the Atlantic seaboard will become a great and booming nation.

Achenbach tracks Washington's river plan from the choosing of the site for the national capital, which led to his being elected as the first president, to its link, decades after his death, to various grandiose plans for a canal that would run hundreds of miles. Ultimately the dream of a Potomac route to the West is abandoned. The nation splits not East and West but North and South, and the river becomes a boundary between warring sides in the Civil War.

Like such classics as Undaunted Courage and Founding Brothers, Achenbach's The Grand Idea is a large narrative of a great man and his grand plan that captures the uncertainties and conflicts of the new country, the passions of an ambitious people, and the seemingly endless beauty of the American landscape.

From Publishers Weekly
A snappy book about a river and horseback trip more than two centuries ago? Hard to pull off, but Achenbach (Captured by Aliens, etc.) has done so with enough authority to satisfy historians and in a lively style sure to please general readers. His tale is about George Washington's fixation with the West-not today's Far West but the lands inland of the Appalachians-and about what that single-minded interest came to mean for the nation. One wouldn't think that chapters devoted to a single horseback trip that Washington, the nation's first great westerner, took inland in 1784 could be of much interest. But the author uses that trip to unroll a large canvas of subjects, chief among them how a single man's "personal issues had a way of becoming national ones." Fleshing out a day-to-day itinerary with lively excursions into the land's geography, politics, farmers and backwoodsmen, Indians and slaves, Achenbach also unwraps Washington's personality, at once magisterial and rough, obsessive yet realistic, accepting of the people but disdainful of those who got in his way. The Potomac, whose successful development as grand route to the interior would greatly benefit Washington, also plays a central role. Achenbach explains how the river's intractable geography kept the nation's capital from becoming the great metropolis of Washington's dreams. Toward the end, the book wanders off into the Civil War and such subjects as today's Potomac and its landscape. Achenbach ought to have stuck close to his opening intent. The story of Washington's fixity on a dream impossible to realize is a good enough tale on its own. 6 maps.

From Booklist
Thomas Jefferson, with his dream of an "empire of liberty" extending to the Pacific, is generally thought of as the Founding Father most devoted to western expansion. Yet, as this revealing and often fascinating book illustrates, Jefferson was not alone in his hopes and plans for the vast regions beyond the Appalachians. Achenbach, a staff writer for the Washington Post and a monthly columnist for National Geographic, credibly asserts that Washington, from his young manhood, had shown consistent interest, perhaps even an obsession, with the latent promise and possibilities of the West. As a young officer in the Virginia militia, Washington had traversed the frontier to dispute French claims to the Ohio country. Before the American War of Independence began, he had engaged intensely in land speculation there. After independence, Washington claimed his fondest hope was to return to the life of a gentlemen farmer at his beloved Mt. Vernon, but his restless spirit led him to plan an epic journey westward. This is an interesting perspective on Washington's views and personality. Jay Freeman
