If you loved Huey and his guys back in the 80's then this will give you all of your favorite songs in one place. I got one at a store before buying this digital version that had a DVD disk that had nearly all the music videos on it. I gave this 5 stars as it is worth that for the CD alone, but if you find the one with the music videos it is a 10 for sure. If the 80's wasn't your thing... bummer. :)
This collection brings back great memories of this San Francisco rock band. Working hard, Huey and the boys forged one of the most solidly entertaining American bands in history, successfully welding together R&B with 80's musical tools (synthesizers, drum machines) without sacrificing their driving trademark rock 'n roll sound. In short, they managed to modernize their music while retaining their good old fashioned rock roots.Lewis is a perfect front man with his baby blues, and cleft-chinned handsome looks, along with a gravelly but powerfully self-assured voice. The whole idea of the band was to have fun. And they did, as they demonstrated in their music and during the music video revolution (who can forget the amusing image of a reclining Lewis crooning on the beach while the band--buried up to their necks in sand--back him up on "If This Is It").This is a much more satisfying collection than the previous "Time Flies" offering. All the big ones are here: their motion picture hit "The Power of Love"; the hard driving expression of love, "Heart and Soul"; the joyful debut "Do You Believe in Love"; the reggae rhythm of "Perfect World"; the Bruce Hornsby-penned "Jacob's Ladder"; the ambling beat of "Stuck with You"; the blow-the-roof-off-the-place rocker "Hip to Be Square"; and even some rare treasures like "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do", "Cruisin'" and "Trouble in Paradise". One minor drawback: A modest hit for the band, "It Hit Me Like a Hammer", is left out, which is just as good as any of their songs. Oh well.This is definitely a collection I'll enjoy listening to over & over!
As with any "greatest hits" compilation there are going to be some head-scratchers and then debate over why one song was included but another wasn't. For the most part, this album hit all the highs. Mostly. Again, there will always be some debate over some songs missed, but this is a better compilation of greatest hits than you usually get.A couple notes. Other reviewers noted that the digital remastering (which happened on most of their songs) wasn't top-notch. I'm not a real audiophile, but there are some places where it shows. Particularly with the heavier emphasis on the bass. Not a big fan of that. Also, some of the song versions are shorter than their original album version. Wasn't a big deal to me because I wasn't a huge fan, but it is a disappointment. One, because digitally there is no excuse for it, and two, because when you release a greatest hits collection for a group that will sell this many, Capitol Records could have easily made it a 2-disc collection.If you are a die-hard fan, you'll probably want to stay away from this collection. However, if you just loved the vibe of this group and like listening in your car or while doing some other activity, this is all you'll need. Oh, and if you're new to this group and are wondering why this group of guys with mullets is still touring, buy this and find out.
My friends to my knowledge there are two versions of this greatest hits cd. I previously purchased the other Greatest Hits version and there were some key songs missing. I have since bought this one. Curious that that both albums are Greatest Hit's but one has more of the hits than the other and relatively same price. Best example the song Jacobs Ladder is on this Greatest Hits but not on the other. Not sure if they switched record company's or it just wasn't added. Enjoy!
Most Greatest Hits CD's suck, because some nimrod's at the record labels always decide to not include tracks which you and I deem essentials. They consistently botch them and make the discs not worth owning. Back in the mid-90's, they totally botched the original The Best of Huey Lewis and the News, leaving off numerous tracks, and including four forgettable songs. This time they finally got it Perfect, and have every track I would ever want on a HL&TN Hits CD. This disc is a must own! Whomever did the remastering, please pat yourself on the back, it's perfect along with the track selection, it's a perfect CD, please go buy it, you will get your money's worth
This is a good album from music of a few years ago. Unlike some of the other greatest hits albums this one is good, while some of the other bands music of similar vintage sold as greatest hits is not that good of a quality recording. Anyway...if you like these guys, this album is good (CD-ROM)
I cannot explain how much I love this band and Huey's voice. I enjoyed listening to him since I was a little girl. There is not one song I dislike, as long as that incredible voice of his, is singing it. I turn the music up and sing along in my car.
Here is the good about the album: The songs are great. The songs selected are very good it has something from every album but the Plan B album. The remastering is good too. I have all the albums and loved them as a kid growing as I do now in my 30's. It's great to have them all together. Also I will say kudos for including Back in Time from the B2theF soundtrack. The Crusin' song is on there too (edited).Here is the bad:The fact that they crammed all 21 of them onto 1 cd stinks. All the solos and great instrumental parts of the songs have been taken out. They should have done 2 discs in order to include the complete songs. I still have the time flies GH from '96. It only has 12 songs as I recall but they are unedited and the complete versions of the songs with solos. So I'll hang onto that. I realize they cd is 80 mins with 21 songs this is great but with the solos gone it's not a great as it could have been.
